Posting “How To Take Measurements” shows how to take your personal measurements or those of the dress form you are using.
I have released images of my Misses Size 8 sloper into the commons. They may be copied from the image and digitally converted using Adobe. No credit or permission is needed. The slopers were photographed against a cutting mat with 1″ intervals. You can copy the images and then size and grade them in your own graphics program. The slopers are in this posting.
The standard measurements are based on a system where the waist is 9-10″ less than the bust measurement. In a separate page I will provide instructions on how to take your own measurements. The purpose is to equip the reader with the means to make customized patterns and garments or ones based on standard measurements. The measurements are meant to be used in drafting patterns according to instructions I will provide for basic skirts, sleeves and bodices. These instructions are provided to kick-start your own sewing adventure or home based dressmaking business.
A test garment is highly recommended whether standard or personal measurements are used. That is part of the learning experience. It also prevents wastage of fashion fabric. A muslin test garment can always be disassembled and used again for draping smaller garment pieces like belts, cuffs, collars, midriffs, or even to test 1:6 doll clothing patterns.
Please note that there will not be any advice on how to alter patterns. This very important skill is best learned in real time through attending classes with an experienced teacher.
